Eyes are delicate organs and are vulnerable to injuries. The latter varies from minor eye problems to something major and daunting. Also, anything from getting shampoo in your eyes to internal redness should be dealt immediately as it could affect your eyesight.

Moreover, a foreign object could be a tiny particle of dust and in most cases, these objects are so extremely small that you do not notice them until they start causing irritation and you start to profusely rub your eyes. Although small foreign particles are removable, if it goes deep in your eye, it could cause a serious problem. Therefore, you should opt for a prompt treatment in this regard.

Home Treatment

Once you have suspected that something is irritating your eyes, it is suggested you treat it instantly to avoid further eye problems such as swelling and infection. You can do it at home – however, you should take some precautions.

When you begin examining your affected eye, refrain from constant rubbing and putting pressure on the eye. And do not forget to wash your hands before touching your eyes. Moreover, you should not use utensils or implements like cotton swabs or tweezers on the eye’s surface; use only tap water to clear your eyes.

If you wear contact lenses, do not remove them in this case unless you observe sudden swelling. Also, the nature of foreign objects and how it has affected the eyes vary. Therefore, the techniques available could be distinctive – in which case it is probably best that you go to a reputed optometrist.

Professional Treatment

It is suggested you get a consultation from an eye specialist and seek professional help if the foreign object isn’t easily removable. If you procrastinate or delay treatment your eyesight may drastically get weak or you may have blurry vision. Your primary care provider will opt for a proper examination that includes following steps:

  • Numbing the surface of your eyes via an anesthetic drop
  • Application of a fluorescein dye in the form of eye drops; it will glow under a light that is used specifically for this purpose. It will reveal affecting abrasions and objects
  • Using a magnifier regarding locating and eliminating the tiny foreign particles
  • Removing the objects using cotton swabs or water

These are the common steps that your doctor will consider. However, if these techniques remain unsuccessful, you should expect treatment using instruments like needles.

  • If the physician found that the object has caused corneal abrasions, they will provide an antibiotic ointment regarding infection prevention.
  • In case of major corneal abrasions, they will administer eye drops containing homatropine or cyclopentolate regarding pupil dilation. The condition could also cause muscle spasms if your pupil gets constricted before the cornea heals properly.
  • You should expect acetaminophen to remedy severe pain that corneal abrasions cause in most cases.
  • They might suggest a CT scan for further diagnosis.
  • The doctor may refer you to an ophthalmologist – a physician with eye care specialization. They will assist you if your case requires surgery.

Eye problems are indeed frightening and shouldn’t be ignored. And you should opt for immediate professional help in any case that you cannot solve on your own.
